In an article published Jul 08, 2009 in the Reflector I paid particular attention to one of the elementary hires. (Crooks hired as Norwalk assistant Superintendent) This person has two DUI's, resisting arrest with intoxication and a few other alcohol related offenses. Some of these charges in all fairness were plea bargained down to lesser charges with the help of a smart lawyer. My question is this. What are the requirements necessary for employment as a grade school teacher in Norwalk, OH? The taxpayers are quite forgiving and are obviously not worried about how their tax dollars are spent. These facts can be verified by checking the public records located at www.sanduskymuniciplecourt.org, wwwnorwalkmuniciplecourt.org, sanduskycountymuniciplecourt.org, (Clyde clerk of courts)
The article was from the Norwalk Reflector, July 08, 2009. "Crooks hired as Norwalk assistant Superintendent" can be found at http://www.norwalkreflector.com/articles/2009/07/08/front/iq_769118.txt. W Hasselbach. A fourth grade teacher for Pleasant Elementary. Juvenile records of course have been sealed. Records are available for public reference @ http://www.norwalkmunicourt.com/search.shtml, http://www.sanduskymuniciplecourt.org, http://sandusky-county.org
NICE!
I saw this bumper sticker the other day,I loved it.
O B A M A
One Big Ass Mistake America
You are on a witch hunt with local educators.
MY PERSONEL experiences with at least 10 of our current teachers which all think are so good, which they do do a good job.but see them out of norwalk at bar's and at PIB..from your persecuting minds they would not meet your standard so go fight for the socalist state we are becoming obama girl..lol
I even know of one teacher that ended up living with one of her students. Funny story there I tell ya.
I just wanted to clarify I do not support repubilcans or like bush but,I feel obama isnt the answer either.
is there some personal vendetta for above mentioned teacher? we all have skeltons in our closet. . . and if you say you don't you're not being honest.
I choose not to vote because it only encourages these con artists.
I don't have a vandetta against the person, I don't even know her. I just think its funny she'd get hired as a teacher with something like this on her record.
Did she come from the Berlin-Milan system?? Snook relieved of Crook. Although I agree that those who teach should also have a life. They should be held to a higher standard as the example for the children. When the kids hear this discussed or they reserch it for themselves, the respect issue kinda goes into the dumper.
Just like that state highway patrollman who posed for that racist picture. He's now back on the job! I can only hope he pulls over the "wrong" black guy who knows who he is and what he did
Unemployment is at an all time high. There are qualified teachers that have immaculate records. I won't attack your grammar or lack thereof, so why are you attacking me for my choice of a username. Obama had nothing to do with the hiring of alcoholic teachers for the Norwalk School system. In today's troubled times our children deserve to have the advantage of a good solid education and teachers that care more about the students they are molding, than which bar they will hit when the school bell rings. Be careful when you are out driving after dark. You might be to busy with your giant size doobie and not see the drunk teacher coming at you on the wrong side of the road. lol
someone has their panties in a wad for the norwalk schools. . . now they are alcoholics running to the bar when the school bell rings. Really??? And you have first hand knowledge on this how.... because you're are there as well to see it with your own eyes? Hmmmm. But I doubt you would be in a bar, you seem so self-righteous and high and mighty and all.
The time of your post .... 3:40 saturday..... that gave you just enough time to get home after the bars closed, check your email and post on the forums about the drunk teachers that you saw all around Norwalk driving down the wrong side of the road. Man, I sure am glad I wasn't out after dark to be smashed by all those drunk teachers on the wrong side of the road. OH look out .... there goes one now!
Hmmmmnnnnn...let me check. Nope. My panties aren't in a bunch just yet. You questioned the time I was online. If it is any of your business, which it is not, I was at a friends house. Her husband was diagnosed with cancer and given a year to live. Being the uptight freak that I am, I went to her home to give her the support she desperately needed. I haven't been in a bar for years, I did however tip two brews while relaxing in my pool yesterday. I did not however go out and drive and get a DUI. The last time I checked this is still America and we are all entitled to our opinions. Including you. Attack me all you like. I believe my children have the right to learn from a teacher with a clear and focused agenda. All taxpayers have a right to question how tax dollars are spent. Instead of hiring teachers with two DUI's and other alcohol related offenses (resisting arrest while intoxicated etc.) the school should have given one of the many unemployed teachers with CLEAN records a chance. You attack me for having an opinion, should I attack you for the many grammatical errors in your post? No. I don't think I will. It is not your fault. Maybe your teacher had a hangover. Also, I did not say ALL of the teachers employed by the Norwalk School system are alcoholics. But even one with an extensive DUI history is one too many.
I will say that ALL teachers in the Norwalk school system are alcoholics!!
At least it gives them an excuse.
Meaningless Dribble, nothing of any importance what's so ever!
My thoughts on (which mean NOTHING i'm sure) this is that people who TEACH children and spent 8 hours + a day with CHILDREN should be looked at from ALL angles. In times like these where some teahcers use thier power position to exploit kids, there can be NO stone left unturned and if this guy is a Lindsay Lohan dui collectiong HOT MESS then he doesn't need to be teaching children.
(I'm sure the minute there is a whisper of something going on, those who said this was some sort of witch hunt will be calling for JUSTICE--pathetic)
My Mom was a teacher, and if the kids in her class wouldn't drive her to drink, the 3 she had at home definatly could have. Seriously, Mom never touched a drop of alcohol in her 83 years.
RIP Mom I love you and miss you every day
Kottage Kat. Obviously your mother taught you a lot. The respectful, loving tone of your post is heart warming. It seems your mother not only left you with wonderful memories but also a great sense of humor.
for employment than the Norwalk Board of Education. I received a call from an acquaintance. They were quite pleased to find a $25.00 check in their mailbox from a class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart. To supplement their income this person had applied for a part time customer service job at Wal-Mart. They were told Wal-Mart did not hire anyone with a minor felony on their record. (Riding across private property on a three wheeler) I find it interesting that Wal-Mart cares more about their customers and cost retention than the Norwalk Board of Education does about their elementary students. Technically Wal-Mart did not lose the lawsuit. They settled. I don't know if they were told to change their hiring practices. I could find no relevant info on the internet about this recently settled lawsuit.
If you can get a copy of the book "Bully of Bentonville" please do so and read it, what an eye opener about WalMart. They have some very strasnge practices and have thousands of lawsuits going at this moment. Well worth the read. P.S. They do not sell it at Walmart.
Last I heard drinking alcohol was not against the law.
You are absolutely correct. It is not illegal to drink. However the legal limit to drive in Ohio when consuming alcohol is .08. Driving with an alcohol level of .08 or higher IS against the law. Driving with an alcohol level testing .17 (or above) blood or breath test or .238 urine test (or above) is considered "high tier" and can be subjected to double time to be served. A good lawyer can usually plea bargain 2nd or 3rd offenses down to being charged and time served to a first offense with little or no jail time.(Reference OhioBar.org) Driving with an alcohol level of .209 and .210 is well above the legal limit and therefore illegal. If your goal in life is to teach and mold the minds of young children,(and try to keep your alcohol related arrests quiet)One might want to ride with a friend, call a cab or drink at home. It is not unusual for a young person to go out and have a good time with friends. Go ahead, have a little fun. Tip back a few. When the alcohol related arrests start adding up however, One might like to TEACH Oneself how to spell SELF CONTROL.
Good Luck Norwalk! Not only does he have alcohol related incidents, but he too married one of his students. That's down right sick in my book. Teachers and Administration should be held to a higher standard - they are in the public eye and represent not only their school system, but also the community in which they reside. Are any of us perfect? Absolutely not - unless we're God. Do we all have skeletons in our closet? You bet we do - but that doesn't excuse the fact that they preach about drinking and driving, public intoxication, etc... SET AN EXAMPLE!!! And now he's an Assistant Superintendent? Well but then again...look at the Superintendent from where Crooks came from!!!
A recent article in the Norwalk Reflector claims that the Norwalk schools are running with a deficit. Yes, it is disturbing that Crooks married a student. Was he(allegedly) seeing her while she was still a student? Wouldn't that qualify him as a pedophile? Didn't the school he was employed with at the time have a problem with it? And if not, What the....? Was he charged and convicted of alcohol related offenses? If so, it is easy to see why it was smooth sailing for someone with an extensive alcohol related arrest and conviction record to get hired as a fourth grade teacher. What on earth are the members of the Norwalk Board of Education thinking? Or were they thinking at all? Are their brains also clouded with alcohol? VOTE NO for any additional levies or renewals. If all tries to get more money from the taxpayers fail, does the state step in and take over? That would be a good thing.
In the article it states the need for more money is caused partly by students moving out of the district. Hmmmmn. Isn't that an unsolvable puzzle. Why on earth would anyone move out of the district. Everyone I know wants their kids to be taught how to spell DUI!!!
Out with the old. One can only hope that bringing in new faces will also bring in new hope for a pleasant change. Hiring teachers with clean backgrounds and not because they are someones drinking buddy would be a good start.
Ha! I went to school with W. Hasselbach. She was a horrible person even before the dui's. She used to Bully this girl that was her neighbor and she used to talk her friends into harassing her and her family. For years and years. Her parents were idiots. Not so good for Norwalk, But at least shes not teaching in Clyde! *phew!*
where does it stop people. If you are going to not hire someone for a mistake or two they made years ago, then you better be ready to NOT hire just about everyone. What if someone has 9 speeding tickets and 4 ran stop signs? Are they not putting other peoples lives at risk just as much as someone who got a DUI. And lets not assume the DUI was a .3 either. It easily could of been a two beer DUI, which is a huge difference.
I Would normally say to you that yes, people can change...but not this one. I will just say once again Im glad she is not teaching at my kids school.
You my dear, must have a personal vendetta. Or maybe your panties are just in a wad. She was only hanging out at 4:08 on a Wednesday for a book club meeting at Casa! How dare you care what kind of person your children have as a teacher! You must be a horrible mother!!!lol
arnmcrmn: .209 and .210 (over twice the legal limit) are not that far away from a .3. Two beers? And yes, three years ago for the last arrest is a looooooooong time ago. And resisting arrest while intoxicated, she was just playing! She thought they were her home town cops....she didn't know the OSP don't play them games. There is a difference between a bad driver running stop signs and getting speeding tickets and a bad driver who is speeding and driving through stop signs while OVER twice the legal limit. If you don't believe that, get super drunk and drive through a stop sign. Make sure you hit someone. Have a friend (sober) drive through a stop sign and hit someone. See if the Judge gives you the same amount of jail time and fines. (You might want to get a lawyer who specializes in DUI convictions first)This person should not be prevented from getting ANY job. Say in a factory, or customer service at Wal Mart. Teaching elementary school is a whole different ball game.
shouldn't a person be dead w/a bac of .3?
Im not sure how much it takes to kill ya but i remember hers was really freaking high. Course she liked to show up drunk to school so maybe she had a higher tolerance! How nice.
It just means you are eligible for employment at Norwalk Elementary. Some experts think that a BAC of .40-.45 will cause the body to start shutting down. You might be surprised at some of these people that were able to function with a BAC much higher. I am not advertising this web site however it contains info on some folks with rather high levels of alcohol in their system. www.barstool.net. One gentleman (if that is what you would like to call him) had a BAC of .69 and he is very much alive. One person when found after committing suicide had a BAC of .42. Meaning that he still had enough control of his body to lift a gun. Although the authorities did say that his BAC could have been much higher at the time of his death.
Mr. Linder, The voters have expressed their confidence in you. Now it is time to reciprocate. Educators should be held to a higher standard. Time to clean up the system. Start with the hiring practices of those entrusted with the education of elementary children.
Kottage Kat was recently attacked unfairly by Swiss. A large portion of posters go from different topic to different topic and change their opinions as they go. For example (and this is not a personal attack against AWU)it is a fact. Earlier on this topic AWU states that this is a "witch hunt" against local educators. Her opinion seemed to be a tirade against Obama more so than an opionin about Pleasant Elementary teachers with extensive DUI histories. This statement was made because of my user name. Not because of any tried and true personal opinion about the drunken educators in Norwalk. However on April 06, 2009. Forum topic, Norwalk Reflector: "Good Role Model" AWU states, and I quote ""Don't worry Norwalks School System is filled with drunk's and egotistical educators." Different day, different user name that posted original comment, different opinion. Kottage Kat is not as perfect as Swiss...but I like how she rolls.
I too have noticed that, Obamagirl! why do people do that? And how is it that the people who make the stupidest, lamest remarks have the most points?
You need to slam Obama to get points, or you could tell someone that their post is dribble. However, one person's "dribble" is another's "DRIVEL" (Nuff said!) And while we have made our point, we will remain "pointless" And "happily" so!!!!!!!
I do not understand the point system, thus I never pay attention to it, I just post merrily away, happy as if I had my right mind. I do not care one whit about ones poloticks, and take each post on its merit only.
Personal attacks are a way of life for some and trying not to reciprocate I often fail. I do not get my knickers in a knot over what is said.
I am not able to comment on this topic other than what I have already said, as I am childless and unfamilar with the alcohol comsumption of the educators of the local children.
Thank you to all for your kind comments.
Kat.. there is no need to thank me for my kind comments to you... you are more than welcome
It will be interesting to see how the BOE handles this situation. If they can forgive, ignore and hire a teacher for Pleasant Elementary that has an extensive alcohol related arrest history then surely this is not that big of a deal. I suggest this student and the parents involved hire an attorney that is experienced in getting people off, or getting the charges reduced for subtance abuse infractions. Benjamin M Chapman in Sandusky would be a good place to start. Maybe punishment in the form of community service as a Teachers Aide for the fourth grade at Pleasant?
I think that one of the reasons that teachers no longer fear their futures, and gamble with career altering choices such as drinking too much, or not staying current with what they teach, and trying to just get to a certain point and then once they are there, just skate through to retirement..
to me this seems to be a very dangerous and self defeating concept.. don't we want the brightest, and the best teachers for our kids?? if we do, we should not judge them and keep them on because they only had so many good years that they were barely even evaluated on in their past.. and that they did well to get to their "tenure" spot.. and then have fallen apart after that..
I believe that we as a nation should do away with most unions.. most people who have been in a union setting, will tell you that the union many times protects the wrong people, and the worst employees...is that what we are striving for???
with this system, it is apparent that many times we are paying too many workers, too high of a price, because of their "seniority" and lack of production because of their seniority, which in turn raises the costs and lowers the quality of everything that we work towards.. that holds true for everything from cars, to education..and is particularly obvious in looking at government agencies.
every workers should be evaluated on their work performance, and should be promoted, and even kept on because of the quality and quantity of their performance.. that would yield the best product for the most efficient cost, and that is what we say that we are striving for when we are competing with other foreign markets.. and is the way that we will get back in the game with all of them
Swiss, I can't believe I am saying this but I agree with you on the subject of unions. The union that my husband belongs to takes his money every week but is pretty much useless. However without it I do think that the conditions where he works would be much worse. We do get four free zoo tickets a year. Of course if you take into consideration that his union dues are far more a year than what it would cost to just go to the zoo and buy them it's a wash.
I just spoke to someone who did her student teaching at Pleasant. She told me that most school boards will check your arrest and conviction record BEFORE hiring someone as a teacher. The woman in question was just hired in SPITE of her extensive alcohol related arrest record. If an individual has a long history of arrests and they hire you anyway that tells me that the Norwalk BOE is not very responsible with the tax money it collects from the citizens of Norwalk and that they care very little about the young minds they are trying to enrich.
I am very much opposed to unions, they have lost the purpose for which they were started, and have led to the loss of jobs, and manufacturing facilities.
There are certain areas where unions have NO place and one of them is the Health Care industry, as health Care Professional, I could not go out on strike and leave those for whom I care at the mercy of temps, or scabs.
I also feel that it is do late to undo the damage that unions have done to America, and the wake up call was not heard by those who thought the "union" was going to insure their jobs. Now we hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
My heart breaks for every American who has suffered the loss of employment, it has been a long rough ride. Where is the "HOPE" ????
Mine is not in economic structure of the country, it is on a far higher plane.
This is another example of the union fat cats showing you a shiny object (zoo ticket) and you think 'well, it's all worth it'. Unions are crap! They had their place back in the day, don't get me wrong. Nowadays, basic labor laws protect the worker from unjustice. Unions protect those who normally wouldn't be employed. You know the ones...get written up for being late, not working, etc..and the union steps in and sticks up for this person. How is this fair to the other 80% of people belonging to this union, paying their dues....for what? Where's your reward for coming in to work every day, being on time, giving it your all? Oh, here you go, here's zoo tickets.
We were NOT impressed with the "shiny" objects (zoo tickets)that were dangled in front of us. When my husband was hired by his current employer he was told that all employees are required to join the union as it was a "union" shop. The only employees that are exempt are the supervisors who all also happen to be the owners sons, therefore in no danger of being terminated for any reason. My husband has only been late once due to weather conditions and a flat tire. He used his vacation time to get three major surgeries, and has never called in sick. In this economy with so many jobs available (ha) should he walk away from his job because of this? I think not, however since we have to pay the outrageous dues anyway, yes we used the tickets. And we were not doing a happy dance thinking "well they are worth it." I agree with your assessment of unions. They protect the deadbeats. And if the Norwalk BOE will hire someone with an extensive alcohol related arrest record, happily for her the teachers union will protect her job if she gets another DUI. And the taxpayers will continue to pay her wages.
I just read the article on the boys that defaced the St Paul sign. Someone asked how boys with a record could be allowed to play on a high school sports team. Are you kidding? "Everyone has skeletons in their closet, If you say you don't your not being honest". "Someone must have their panties in a wad". Or maybe it is a "personal vendetta". If you can teach elementary school in Norwalk with an extensive alcohol related arrest record, surely you can play on a sports team. No one can take away St Paul's victory. Does this put a slight damper on it. Yes. It's not like these boys are teaching elementary school in Norwalk.
DUI's are not malicious crimes.
There is no intent to hurt, mame, or steal from anyone.
It's simply a matter of having a few too many, then making a poor decision to drive home.
Unless this intoxicated person is involved in an accident, they have hurt nobody but themselves.
It's understandable that DUI laws are strict, for the protection of other drivers, and pedestrians.
The only reason its frowned upon so terribly, is in the last 25 years or so, MADD made light of this matter. for good reason.
Most DUI bashers drink as much as anyone. But they have just never been caught.
I know many folks that do not drink, they also don't criticize folks with a DUI on their record.
Repeat offenders deserve a little harassment I will say
In no way does it impede ones teaching abilities.
Maybe a few on the Norwalk BOE
have a DUI skeleton in their closet. Allowing them to be forgiving of such nonsense
You seem talented at checking a persons back round.
Try looking into Judge Ridge's back round.
Then try Obama's, and many other government officials.
I realize the teacher in Question, has other issues, I'm just defending her past DUI's.
If you get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive drunk the intent is most certainly implied. The accident that left this person with one of the DUI's was published in the paper or on the web as was the second DUI that was plea bargained down to show as her first. Also resisting arrest while intoxicated and bow riding and underage drinking were in the paper or on the web. I did not pay for a back "ground" check. There is also a recent picture on a social web site of her on a "party bus" surrounded by beer cans and cases. At least she wasn't driving. That would have been the way to go to prevent the other DUI arrests. As I mentioned in a previous post a teacher that I spoke with said back "ground" checks are routine when you apply for a teaching job and in most cases will prevent the hiring of such an individual. This is done to prevent the hiring of people with a questionable back "ground" Her background was ignored by the board of education for whatever reason???? You have stated many times in your posts that you were wrongly incarcerated. Of course you don't give any details. 90% of the people locked up for infractions will say the same thing. And no, sorry to disappoint you, I don't have a drinking problem and although I do drink once or twice a year I hire a designated driver who is happy to take me and who ever I am with home for $20.00. Also, I never said Obama was perfect and I do not agree with all that he has done. The whole country made a choice, not just me. The majority always wins in every election. (Almost every election, sorry Al Gore) And as after every election you will have sore losers. My user name is just that. A user name. Nothing more, nothing less.
You've cleared a few things up Obamagirl
I'll try and do the same.
Like I said I don't know this teachers back round, but from what you've just stated, She probably shouldn't be teaching, I'll give you that.
I was, as i said: simply defending the DUI aspect of the matter.
I wasn't implying you have, or ever had a drinking problem.
My statement was "most" DUI bashers.
On the other hand, there's many non drinkers that bash as well.
Funny how if said in any other way other than 100% politically correct, and all your i's and t's are not dotted and crossed, misunderstandings take place.
I only stated in one article the mention of being falsely accused.
The rest of the jail talk was in defense or to bring light to a matter.
I would have voted for Obama, had I been forced to vote. He's by far the lesser of 2 evils as far as I can tell.
It's early, and he's got 3 years left,,,,I think.
It only seemed appropriate to use him. But see you missed my point.
My point was, forget about a teacher for a minute, lets have a look at our nations leaders, as well as our locale Judge.
I already know the answer to that one though.
where is it written in their job description that they are NOT allowed to enjoy their free time as they please, and then they must face the consequences of their actions, like every other citizen??
I was not aware that to be a teacher, or a lawyer, or a professional athlete or whatever , that they have to be this shining example of what others should strive to be..
these are just people!! they have strengths and weaknesses like we all do, so if they decide to drink, then drive, obviously it is not the best decision, but that is their free time, and personal life.. what concern is it of ours??
obviously, if the person with a lot of DUI'S should be monitored AT SCHOOL, and make sure that they are NOT drinking while at work..and if they are, by all means ,let them go.. but I seem to remember, back in the day, where there was a school principal who was an admitted alcoholic, who cleaned himself up.. but for how long did he do his job , probably many times under the influence, and he is still hailed as a great principal...
I know in my school years, I had some teachers with alcohol problems, and some with drug problems, some were dating students, and many were living an alternative lifestyle.. but if this activity is not going on while they are working, (except the teacher dating a student)then why is it our concern?? sure it gives us reason to check on them and their sobriety randomly, and if they ever are found to be drunk or high at school, they are automatically let go..
I just think that we stick people on pedestals, that they never asked for.. why should anyone who is exceptionally good at golf, be presented , and have to live up to OUR expectation of what they do in their free time??it's time to get real.. there is no Santa, no tooth fairy, no Easter bunny, and most athletes are people .. with all of the same flaws that we have, or what most of the people we know have...don't be shocked to find out that they have sexual urges.. they never claimed to be perfect.. WE put that burden on them.. unfairly!!!
You might want to go back and read your post from 12-03-2009, on this very same topic. And many of your other posts. You are constantly contradicting yourself. Now you also might want to take your own advice. I for one don't have a problem with L Hebert and I don't know anyone else who does. Except you. I have heard nothing but good things about her and her professionalism. So take your own advice. Back off Jack. I almost felt myself feeling sorry for you when everyone was attacking you a few weeks back. Please note, I said "almost". You asked for and deserved every single one of those comments. And why is it you feel free to judge everyone from Kat to Ms. Hebert but no one else should have a personal opinion? Also I hate to disappoint you but there are rules in place that require teachers, lawyers, doctors etc to uphold certain moral and ethical standards. There is a lawyer in Fremont right now facing disbarment for sexually harassing clients.

I tried to find the article your talking about but couldn't. What's said persons name?
As for the qualifications, once you graduate high school, you then go on to collage where they teach you how to teach the stuff you allready learned in the past 18 years of your life. Is it really that hard??
This town is small enough, I'm sure there are many who went to school with some of those who are now teaching school. One of the best forms of birth controll I know of.
